October 2020 Deadline for Selective Licensing Approaching

Applications must be submitted before 31th October 2020 or there will be an automatic late minimum penalty charge of £136 payable to Rotherham Council. Also additional penalties are charged for any breaches of the licence scheme. The licence will be back dated to the scheme start date of the 1st May 2020 and run for 5 years.
It will be a criminal offence for a landlord to operate a residential let property in a licensing area without a licence from the 1st May 2020.
Rotherham Council has informed YAB that they will be conducting enforcement checks and any landlords who fail to licence, breach licence conditions or breach other housing-related legislation will be subject to a range of penalties from prosecutions in Magistrates or Crown Court to Civil Penalties of up to £30,000. The Council have also confirmed that rent repayment orders will also feature in appropriate cases for any unlicensed properties.
